Stella Yu grew up in Hong Kong and has been in the US since 1964. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Fine Arts and in Arts Education. In 1995, Yu founded Arts Street, a job-training and internship program where youth become a culturally competent creative workforce. Among the numerous awards, the “National Arts & Humanities Youth Program” highlights the legacy of Arts Street. She retired in 2016 after 48 years of successful careers in Colorado as an art educator, business entrepreneur in bilingual graphics and printing, and Arts Education Director for the City & County of Denver in Mayor Webb’s Administration. Beyond working in the arts and youth development, Yu has been active in community building, strengthening the La Alma Neighborhood in Central Denver, and serving in the community advisory councils of the Denver Foundation and the Nonprofit Finance Fund. She spearheaded efforts for the Asian communities to build resilience in Colorado and nationally. In the early 90s, Yu was VP of the Asian Cultural Center and co-founding president of the Asian Roundtable of Colorado. After retirement, Ms. Yu helped lead the 2020 Census in the Colorado “AAPI complete count” efforts and recently launched the Action Against Hate initiative in Colorado. She is also an alternative Charter School board member, a Beanstalk Foundation fellow, and finance chair of HD5 of the Denver Democratic Party. Stella and her husband work/live in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe.
