Denver Democrats Statement on the leaked Supreme Court Draft Decision Striking Down Roe v. Wade

The Denver Democrats are horrified that one of the most important constitutional rights for women - the right to reproductive autonomy and access to abortion care – could be overturned by the Supreme Court. If the draft decision is finalized, abortion would immediately become illegal in at least 13 states, with many other states positioned to follow suit. This would be the first time in history that the Supreme Court has removed a constitutional right. It is a terrifying culmination of a minority, right-wing contingent’s unrelenting attack on women’s bodily autonomy.

As evidenced by the swift and furious response across the country, the majority of the U.S. population recognizes and abhors this clear escalation of authoritarian ideals - it’s government-mandated pregnancy, clear and simple. It also starts the ball rolling to wipe out key decisions around LGBTQ+ rights. What’s next on their agenda? The overwhelming majority of Americans support these rights, and we must do everything we can to prevent this reversal of progress.

We’re fortunate to live in Colorado, whose State Legislature passed and Democratic Governor Polis just signed into law, the Reproductive Health Equity Act, codifying a person’s fundamental right to make reproductive healthcare decisions free from government interference. It’s a clear example of how much elections matter.

That’s why the most important thing we can do now is make our voices heard through voting - especially during the upcoming midterm elections. We’ve seen how just a few votes can change the outcome of an election. With human rights and our democracy on the line, it’s imperative that everyone does all they can to elect Democrats this year. No one can sit this out.

Rally Tonight
