January 6th is a clear reminder of how fragile our democracy is, especially as many continue to deny the severity of what occurred and perpetuate the Big Lie.

As we reach the one-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection – a coordinated, violent attempt to overturn a free and fair election – we think it’s important to reflect on what happened. We are thankful for the actions of those on the ground that day who did everything in their power to stop this direct attack on our democracy. January 6th is a clear reminder of how fragile our democracy is, especially as many continue to deny the severity of what occurred and perpetuate the Big Lie. While we are hopeful that our Justice Department will follow through with its public statements that it will hold everyone who participated in this treasonous attack accountable, we also know that it will take more than convictions to combat current threats to our country’s democratic principles. Misinformation and vitriol are at an all-time high, and much of it is spread by elected officials. With midterm elections coming up in November, we all have the opportunity to elect leaders who speak truth to power and have a genuine drive to instill in their communities the values we hold dear as Democrats. Let’s use January 6th as our rallying cry to remind us how important it is stay engaged and most importantly, vote.
