The Democratic Party of Denver applauds the jury's decision to convict Donald Trump on all 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments. This historic verdict marks the first time a former U.S. president has been criminally convicted and sends a clear message that no one, not even the most powerful, is above the law.
While we are heartened to finally see some measure of accountability for Trump's many misdeeds, the fact that he remains the presumptive Republican nominee for president in 2024 is deeply troubling. Even as a convicted felon, Trump continues to command the loyalty of a significant portion of the GOP base. This speaks to the normalization of corruption and criminality that has infected the Republican party in recent years.
As Democrats, we must redouble our efforts to protect the rights and freedoms we have fought so hard to secure. From a woman's right to choose to voting rights to LGBTQIA+ equality, the hard-won progress of the last century is under assault by Republican extremists at every level of government. We cannot allow our elected offices, from city councils to the Oval Office, to be occupied by those who flout the rule of law and seek to impose their narrow ideological agenda on the rest of us.
In the coming months, the Democratic Party of Denver will be working tirelessly to engage voters, register new Democrats and support candidates who share our values of integrity, equality and justice for all.
