DENVER, Colo. (April 5, 2024) – On Sunday, we celebrated International Transgender Day of Visibility. This past week, it has come to light that some individuals with a history of vicious transphobic activism have become involved with the Democratic Party of Denver.

As the Chair of the Democratic Party of Denver, I want to affirm our unwavering support for the rights and dignity of transgender individuals. Our party is built on the foundation of inclusivity, equality and respect for all, regardless of gender identity. It is imperative that we vocalize our support for the transgender community, ensuring that every individual feels safe, valued and included within our ranks.

I want to make clear that the Democratic Party of Denver is not associated in any way with groups such as the so-called Democrats for an Informed Approach to Gender (DIAG). Further, these groups are not authorized to use the moniker “Democrats,” and I call upon this group, and others like it, to immediately cease the unauthorized use of the term “Democrats” in their organization’s name.

The Democratic Party of Denver recognizes the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals, particularly trans youth, who are disproportionately affected by high rates of suicide. This tragic reality is often exacerbated by anti-trans rhetoric and exclusionary behaviors that have no place in our society—let alone within our party. Such rhetoric does not reflect the ideals and values of the Democratic Party, and we categorically reject any form of discrimination or hatred directed toward transgender individuals.

We understand the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for all members, especially those from marginalized communities. It is our responsibility to foster spaces where transgender individuals can freely express their identities without fear of judgment or harm. Our commitment extends beyond words; we are dedicated to implementing policies and practices that actively support and protect the rights of transgender people. Put simply, trans rights are human rights.

To the transgender community, and particularly to our trans youth, we want you to know that you are not alone. The Democratic Party of Denver stands with you. We are committed to fighting against the forces of exclusion and bigotry that seek to undermine your rights and dignity. We pledge to work tirelessly to ensure that our party and our community are places where you can thrive and be your authentic selves.

In solidarity, we call upon all members of the Democratic Party of Denver and our wider community to join us in this vital effort. Together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable and compassionate world—one where every individual, regardless of gender identity, is respected and cherished.

Let us move forward with love, understanding and an unwavering commitment to justice for all. The Democratic Party of Denver is proud to stand in solidarity with the transgender community, today and always.
